What to expect when you quit caffeine
Many people notice headaches, tiredness and low concentration in the first days without caffeine. For most, these withdrawal symptoms are strongest in the first two to three days and fade within about one to two weeks. After that, a lot of people report steadier energy and better sleep.
Quit at once or step down?
- Step down if you drink a lot: replace one cup a day with decaf or tea every few days. Withdrawal is usually milder.
- Quit at once if you prefer a clean start: plan it for a calm week, not before an exam or a big deadline.
Tips
- Keep the ritual, change the drink. Decaf, herbal tea or warm water with lemon keep the morning routine.
- Drink water and sleep enough in the first week. Both help with headaches and tiredness.
- Check hidden caffeine in cola, energy drinks, black and green tea, chocolate and some painkillers.
