What counts as "no sugar"?
Most no sugar challenges mean no added sugar: sweets, cakes, soft drinks, sweetened coffee and many sauces and snacks. Natural sugar in whole fruit and plain milk is usually allowed. Decide your rules before you start and write them down, so you don't have to negotiate with yourself later.
Popular challenge lengths
- 7 daysA good test week to discover where sugar hides in your day.
- 30 daysThe classic challenge. Many people find sweet cravings get weaker.
- 90 daysLong enough to build new habits for snacks and drinks.
Tips
- Read labels. Sugar hides under names like glucose syrup, dextrose, maltose or sucrose.
- Swap drinks first. Soft drinks and sweetened coffee are often the biggest sugar source. Water, tea and black coffee are easy swaps.
- Plan snacks. Nuts, fruit, yogurt without added sugar or cheese help when you're hungry between meals.
